Liverpool were held to a goalless draw in Friday’s Division One opener to Brighton while Manchester City beat Arsenal in an 11-goal thriller a day later. West Ham were the only other side to claim a victory on gameweek one.
Nabili Zoubdi Touaizi scored a hat-trick for City in Saturday’s 6-5 win over Arsenal. He scored the home side’s opener at the Academy Stadium inside of seven minutes, before Arsenal responded with three first-half goals to turn the game on its head.
Emile Smith Rowe levelled the match in the 20th minute, before Krystian Bielik gave Arsenal the lead after half an hour and Xavier Amaechi doubled the Gunners’ advantage with only minutes remaining until the break.
It didn’t stay 3-1, however, with City halving the deficit through Adrian Bernabe in first-half injury time. The Sky Blues would find a leveller through Zoubdi just minutes into the second-half too.
Smith Rowe put Arsenal back into the lead at 4-3 before a Taylor Richards own goal on the hour mark levelled proceedings again. Rabbi Matondo put City into the lead midway through the second-half, but Stephy Mavididi struck late to make it 5-5.
City weren’t to be denied, however, with Zoubdi claiming his hat-trick and winning the game in the 88th minute.
