Arsenal confirm midfielder Xavier Amaechi has signed his first professional contract. The 17-year-old joined the Gunners in 2013 and has risen through the youth ranks to the reserve side, making 20 appearances for the u18s and u23s. A first-team appearance could await the winger in the near future should he continue developing at such a rapid rate.
An official statement on Arsenal’s website read: “We would like to congratulate Xavier on his new contract and look forward to his continued progress at the club”. Amaechi has featured in eight of Arsenal’s 10 reserve team games this season, contributing three goals for his troubles.
The teenager is considered to be the best player in his age group and made the step up to the reserve side as a 16-year-old. Amaechi is still some distance from being in the Arsenal first-team, but he will take heart from seeing the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alex Iwobi make the successful transition from youth football to the senior side.
Arsenal have Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Nelson and Theo Walcott for competition in the first-team, so Ameachi will currently be bottom of Arsene Wenger’s pecking order but playing reserve team football will give him a great chance of making the matchday squad of a first-team outing before the 2017/18 season comes to a close. Time will tell.
