Fenerbahce have confirmed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen on loan until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old joined Spurs from AZ Alkmaar in 2016 but managed only two goals in 27 Premier League games in his debut campaign.
Harry Kane was a regular up front last season, and after Tottenham signed Swansea City striker Fernando Llorente this summer, Janssen’s chances of playing time greatly diminished.
The Netherlands international made only seven Premier League starts in 2016/17 and was substituted four times in those matches. Janssen scored more goals in the FA Cup (2) and EFL Cup (2) but struggled to replicate such antics in the Champions League – five appearances, zero goals.
Upon his arrival last summer, the 23-year-old took 10 games to score his first league goal in a Tottenham shirt (vs Leicester City on October 29, 2016) and didn’t bag his second for nearly six months (vs Bournemouth on April 15, 2017).
Janssen racked 593 Premier League minutes of football in his first 13 games (46 minutes-per-game on average) but was taken out of the firing line due to an obvious lack of confidence in the second half of the season – amassing 238 minutes in 2018.
His departure was inevitable this summer but likely hinged on Spurs signing a replacement, as they had no adequate cover in attack for Kane. Janssen may yet have a future at Tottenham next summer if he can find his feet in Turkey.
